Tip 1 – Regular Vacuuming
Rugs can accumulate dust and debris, which may wear down the fibers over time.
Vacuum weekly using a handheld vacuum or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment on the lowest suction setting. Always vacuum in the direction of the pile to avoid snagging the delicate fibers.
Avoid using a beater bar or rotating brush, as it can pull or damage the fibers.
Tip 2 – Protect from Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the colors of your rug to fade.
Place the rug away from direct sunlight or use window coverings like curtains or blinds to filter UV rays.
Tip 3 – Handle Spills Immediately
Many rug fibers are absorbent, and liquids can set into the material quickly, making stains difficult to remove.
Blot (don’t rub!) the spill immediately with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible.
For stubborn stains, mix a small amount of mild dish soap with cold water, dab the area gently with a soft cloth, and blot dry.
Avoid using harsh chemicals or excessive water, as they can damage the fibers or cause discoloration.
Never scrub the rug, as this can ruin the delicate structure of the fibers.
Tip 4 – Professional Cleaning
Many types of rugs require specialized care to avoid damage during deep cleaning.
Have your rug professionally cleaned once a year by a service experienced with delicate or specialty rugs. They’ll use gentle methods to remove deep-set dirt without harming the fibers.
Avoid steam cleaning or hot water extraction, as excessive moisture can lead to yellowing or structural damage.
Additional Tips
Avoid placing heavy furniture directly on the rug, as it can crush the fibers. Use furniture pads if necessary.
If storing, roll (don’t fold) the rug with the pile facing inward, wrap it in a breathable fabric, and store it in a dry, cool place to prevent mildew.
